These days making it into the industry takes more than just a single talent. If you really want to be a true star you'll more than likely need to be a double threat, if not a triple threat, which means you can sing, act and/or dance. Drew Seeley is that guy! Drew first came to our attention on Disney's High School Musical tour. He sang all the big hits alongside Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu, and by doing so, hundreds of thousands of teens immediately crowned him a heartthrob. He has the chiseled good looks, the warming smile and more importantly the VOICE that stars are made of. After the tour ended he went on to star in "Another Cinderella Story" and he did his time on Broadway in "The Little Mermaid." Now he'll take on his first starring role in the TBS series "Glory Daze" which is set to premiere Tuesday, November 16th, while simultaneously releasing his first solo CD.
It's 8am in the morning and Drew has just arrived at our photo shoot location. A very seedy hotel in Venice Beach, California. He just finished taping his latest episode of Glory Daze at 3:30am, and with only 2 hours of sleep and a lot of dedication to his craft (not to mention coffee), he's ready for his close up. This is the life of a working actor/musician. Lots of work and not a lot of time to sleep. Drew doesn't mind the hard work because he's all about making sure he does what's neccessary to go a long way in the business, which is why he spent the better part of the year working on his debut CD, entitled "The Resolution: Act 1". As a fellow musician, I can honestly say that he's co-written and recorded some great music that is filled with great melodies and is destined to be received well at radio and by his fans. You have a new CD out right now called "The Resolution, tell me why you felt the need to do this right now?
I had the need to do this since I started singing years ago, but I never had the means and I wasn't really ready. I've done a lot of songs on soundtracks but I've been writing constantly for the last couple of years and I finally have a group of songs that I felt told a story which is important to me as an actor, I didn't want to just put together a couple of club bangers and throw it out there in the world like hey! I made an album. I wanted my first album to be a story.
And the story you wanted to tell, was it autobiographical?
It's semi-autobiographical, I play a character, there's two girls that I'm involved with at different points of the album and it kinda weaves through the good times and the bad times, you know, the things they do to me that ruin my world and then my mistakes and then trying to find a resolution.
So it's a story, but it's not actually a true story? So you weren't juggling two women at the same time?
No, it's not a true story and if it was, I would never write a whole album about it.
Oh ok, cause I was just wonderin!
Certain songs started off as autobiographical but then I also pulled things from what certain friends have told me or just crazy things that pop into my head and created these characters to tell the story.
You have a song on your CD called "Into the Fire", and it's Maroon 5-ish meets Michael Jackson.
That's exactly what I was going for.
It's a great song, I actually like your Pop/Rock stuff. I can see the live show which is important to me, as a musician, to be able to see the live show and know that it will be and exciting live show. Tell me about "Into the Fire"?
I co-wrote that with Justin Grey, It was the first song we wrote together, it was the first day we met, the first session. It's annoying to hear people say, we wrote a song in 20 minutes because a lot of heart and soul goes into these albums, but that song did come together in 20 minutes.
The best songs usually do.
Which is why I was like, Justin you're the guy that's gonna help me finish this vision, if you would be so kind. Which he was, so we started with that song and sort of built everything around that vibe.
What is your goal with this CD? Because you've been on TV before and you're back on TV now and now you have a CD that you're gonna have to promote at some point.
I got myself in over my head, I try to take on too much but I've always been that way.
As far as marketing the record, are you going to your fan base, cause you have a huge fan base, is it going straight to them? Is this like an exclusive present towards them or are you going to radio mainstream?
If radio picks up on it great, but it's expensive to push a song to radio. I've decide to release it in 3 EPs, 3 acts, because of the way the album is set up, the story. Also because I thought it would be interesting to the fans to digest the first part of the story and try to guess to see where it was going to go next. Listen to the first four songs, relax with it and then see what else is coming and then I'll release a full album physically and digitally at the end.
Good idea, so you give them four songs, get them salivating, so they're waiting to see what happened, then you give them another set of four and then another set of four and then release the whole disc.
Yea, then take suggestions from them as to where The Resolution 2 should go.
That's a very clever strategy.
I hope you're right.
Even if I'm not right, I think the theme-ology, is that a word?
Sounds good to me!
The theme-ology is clever. It's called The Resolution, why did you call it the Resolution?
It's called the resolution for a couple of reasons, all the song are about finding love, loosing love, relationship issues. Everything we're trying to do in relationships is find a resolution, or come to some understanding and some sort of meeting of the minds. I'm constantly trying to get there with whoever I'm talking to or singing to in the songs on the album. Other reasons, my musical mentor Ray Chan, passed away three years ago in a tragic motorcyle accident and we were just about finished with an album that we were gonna put out that ended up never seeing the light of day because of that, so this is sort of me finishing what we started. So it's my resolution, it's a selfish album in the way that I need to do this regardless of how it would be put out, and it's dedicated to him too.
So this is the first of the three?
Yes!
Now a title like "The Resolution", which you just explained, which I understand, doesn't that sound like it should be the ending of the three?
The full album in called the Resolution, the first ep is called the Resolution Act 1, then there's act 2 and and act 3. So this is the introduction to the story. I guess that kind of gives it away "The Resolution", that there will be a resolution.
What can we expect from a Drew Seeley live performance?
Uh, Fireworks! alot of crazy...
So it's like a KISS show? ha ha!
Yea, crazy makeup, costumes... umm definitely a live band. I've been on the road before and I've had dancers which was fun and great and we'll try to incorporate that into the show. Most of these song really rock out so I wanna recreate that live.
You have a new TV show on TBS called Glory Daze, tell us about the show?
It takes place in 1986 at Haze University in Indiana and it's about 4 incoming freshman all pledging a russian fraternity and all the shenanigans that they get into that year trying to find themselves. It's really like a buddy show with four guys, it's about the bonds that they make, and it's good college fun, good times.
And your character?
I play Jason Wilson, I'm a buttoned up young republican with goals of being the president. I idolize Ronald Reagan, I have a photo of him on my beside.
They all do, all republicans do.
Yea, so it's sort of a a stretch, and it's funny and I get to say things that I would never say in real life.
Glory Daze Premiers November 16th, 10pm on Tuesdays on TBS.
How do plan to keep yourself grounded when this show becomes really successful and you're a huge star?
I've great family, great friends, it sounds cliche and annoying to say, but I'm about the work. I don't go out and party that much or drink all night, I'm kinda an old man, I know what I want to accomplish. This album took a lot out of me and the TV show I've been working really hard. There's no time to be messing around, I've been given a golden opportunity and I'm not going to Lindsay Lohan my way out of that. Sorry Lindsay I really hope the best for you.
