Catching up with Jaleel White on his new show Fake It Till You Make It".

Video:

Jaleel White Breakoutmagazine.comJaleel White is no stranger to TV, he made us all laugh via a hit TV show called "Family Matters" in the 90's. A spin-off from another hit TV show, "Perfect Strangers", it was originally designed to be a vehicle for Jo Marie Payton (Harriet Winslow).  That all changed when Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) arrived.  Jaleel played the role so well that, the show soon became about Steve Urkel's character.  Urkel became a pop culture phenomenon, that is still recognizable today. Over the years, Jaleel has laid relatively low, although he did take bit roles in "Dreamgirls", "Pysch", and "Boston Legal".  Jaleel is now making his triumphant return to the small screen in a starring role that he has produced and written called "Fake it Till You Make It".  In this new series, available for viewing exclusively at www.Hulu.com, Jaleel plays Reggie Culkin, a former child star turned celebrity image consultant.  "Reggie Culkin" is a far cry from the role of Steve Urkel. Jaleel has gone to a place of adult hood comedy that I'm sure he hopes will be just as believable as the role he's most known for.  In my opinion, he does a great job!  Jaleel being able to play this role speaks to his talents as an actor and entertainer.  We sat down to talk to Jaleel at a beautiful poolside cabana courtesy of the Beverly Hills Avalon Hotel. Here are a couple of the questions from that interview. (See full video clip for complete interview)

How did you come up the concept of "Fake it Till You Make it?

You know, I didn't have to look to far, I just sort of threw a rock into a room and realized that everything that L.A was becoming was starting to become a backdrop to a TV show. I always think that great TV shows are wrapped around themes, like Seinfeld, one of my favorite sitcoms and the theme of that show was about "people...look how petty we are." If you look at every episode you can kinda find that.  For Fake It Till You Make It, it's just people have the attitude of like...I know you as long as I need you, and people's business cards not matching their hustles.

Most people of your caliber would have shopped this around to networks, but you decided to do it a whole different way by wearing a couple of different hats. You're the writer, producer, star of it, why was this so important for you to do this by yourself?

I think it was important for me to make "Fake It..." the way I made it because I wanted to be able to reach audiences unfiltered. I've endured notes for many years from executives and sometimes you get great notes, but ultimately when you get on a set you can't have the notes of 10 people reigning supreme. It has to come down to the director, it has to come down to the performer, it has to come down to an approved story that works. So basically you're gonna get about 2-3 opinons on any set, no matter how many notes have ever been given. So I wanted to do my thing unfiltered and I wanted to let audiences know that I haven't lost a step at all, if anything I've gotten faster, quicker and better and now I have people twittering me scratching their heads like "he can write this"  and I'm like I've been writing this for a long time.

The stress of trying to do this by your self and come up with stories that are competitive and funny, did you doubt yourself when coming up with the stories, how long did it take you to come up with one story?

The first episode probably endured the most drafts...the first episode probably took me about 5-6 drafts to get right and even then there's still tinkering after that. By the time I hit the 3-4 episodes, I kinda figured out who these characters were and I kinda hit my stride.

What was your barometer, did you sort of just say to your self, "this is funny to me so I think everybody will enjoy it" or did you bounce it off of people to find out?

That's where I worked well with my manager, Chris Snyder and my director Todd Pellegrino, and really our notes kinda went back and forth between the three of us. I kinda had a rule, the best two out of three opinions won.

What do you hope comes out of "Fake It..."?

This is where my manager and I are at odds, but that's cool it's not a bad thing..My manager wants this to be a TV show, for me I'm sort of enjoying what it is to be unfiltered right now, that I would rather do for as long as I can self sustained on the web for as long as I could do it. Even if it does become a TV show, I definitely wanna be able to give some back to the web community that made it what it is.

When you write, produce and star in your own thing, it's an accomplishment for you, but with that comes criticisms from some people.  Perez Hilton called this "A lazy comeback" amongst other things, but you know, it's Perez, but in reading all the comments on his own page they were all positive, they were like this is funny, it's just as good as Entourage, or he grew up to be hot!  What would you say to the Perez's of the world?

I actually don't have anything to say to Perez. When I grew up acting, I didn't have to act amongst hecklers! You got boxes of fan mail from people who love you. It came in the form of letters and stamps...a lot of pride came from that.  "That's Perez's job, he has built a career and on the verge of building an empire, basically on peddling hate, disgust and off base criticism.
