You have to be dumb, deaf & blind (all at once) to not have heard of a little phenomenon called GLEE. A little taste of broadway beamed directly into your home every week. From the first episode in it's season 1 debut, GLEE has hit a homerun and has never looked back. Now, technically this show SHOULD NOT work. It's about singing teens who throughout high school struggle with being the un-popular outcasts. (At any given time, they could end up with a face full of slurpee just to remind them that the popular kids hate them). The fact is GLEE does work! Either there are alot of people who can relate, or people are just down to watch a good sitcom set to music.  I'd like to think it is both.  I'm a professed GLEEK and I take no shame in stating that. I too was one of those kids in the choir in high school, although my choir had not the slightest resemblance of GLEE's musical repertoire.

I just came from an invite only Q&A with GLEE star Chris Colfer (KURT). Chris is the openly gay actor who in a GLEE ensemble has managed to be the standout star of the show by just being himself. Originally he read for the role of ARTIE, the creator didn't think he was right for that role but liked his personal character enough to create the role of KURT especially for him.

How did you hear about the audition for GLEE?

CHRIS: A family friend of a friend was an agent and would send me out on auditions from time to time. I was just in the right place at the right time.

Chris had been auditioning since he was 16 but had never booked anything because he said he would overthink and over act scenes. GLEE was the first thing he booked. Now, I know a ton of actors who've been in Hollywood for 10-15 years that will hate hearing that story. They'll be happy for him but it's like a little piece of salt in the wound of every actor that has studied, and taken class everyday for 10 years to hear someone just come in and book a role in a hit show, but like Chris stated, "Right place, Right time".

Do you have any professional vocal training?

CHRIS: My biggest training is singing in the shower. I was in choir but I quit becasue there was too much standing.

Tell me about when you heard you booked GLEE.

CHRIS: I was in a car with my mom when I got the call and we both went deaf from the screaming!

So with the success of GLEE, what's been the strangest thing that has happened to you?

CHRIS: The strangest thing is going to award shows and sitting in a booth next to Meryl Streep. Oh! and Sandra Bullock pulled my arm at an award show and said that she made her husband watch the Single Ladies episode and then I grabbed her arm and wouldn't let go!

Yea, that would be exciting to have stars that you watched for so long, say that they are actually fans of yours. 

GLEE recently did a all Madonna episode and Madonna herself has said that her favorites on GLEE were Jane Lynch and YOU!

CHRIS: I heard that! If I'm having a bad day, I just remember Madonna knows who I am!

Tell me about meeting President Barack Obama.

CHRIS: We were all holed up in a room with Secret Service, who were telling us not to make any sudden movements when he comes in and we were like (nervously) OK. Then he walks into the room and he's like " Heyyyy...I'm Barack", and I'm like...(duh!) We know who you are. Then Michelle Obama said Barack you're embarrassing the kids.

Being that your character is so close to your real character, was there any difficult scenes to shoot?

CHRIS: The hardest scene to shoot was the Single Ladies dance because I've never danced before, just step touch, step touch, but I've done so much more since then. The hardest vocal was singing "Defying Gravity", but it meant so much to me that I just forgot it was hard.

Is there a favorite memory of GLEE that you have?

CHRIS: I remember taping the sectionals episode in the first season. None of us knew if we were coming back. We were doing "You can't always get what you want" and we were all crying because it could've been our last time ever together.

Who's the most fun on the set?

CHRIS: Amber Riley (Mercedes). We don't hold back, we play pranks. She posted a twitter of me in the gym running. I was SO mad! I run like a duck with an enema!

You're character is always dressed to impress, Do you have any say so in the wardrobe?

CHRIS: No, I have no fashion sense whatever. I'm getting better. Before the pilot, I didn't know who Marc Jacobs was, I was a Target boy.

So what's coming up for Kurt?

CHRIS: Kurt's getting a boyfriend next season. I hope he's less attractive than me, I don't wanna be the weak link.

As an actor who happens to be gay, you've become sort of an instant icon to your community. Has anyone in the industry pressured you tone it down and are you worried about your career when Glee ends?

Chris: Honestly No, and I find that having that fear is like doubting your capability.

Chris Colfer came off as a down to earth actor, who's having the time of his life on a show that shows no end in site. I had previously mentioned that everyone has heard and loves GLEE but according to Chris, the cast took a trip to Australia to promote the show and he asked a fish (yes, that's what I said) if he liked Glee and... well see for yourself what happened.
